Employer Education Assistance

Should I use the taxable portion of employer educational assistance to offset my cost of credit life?
My expenses (tuition and are about $ 17,500) for what they have received about $ 16,000 in aid to education employers. Now I know that non-taxable portion of this aid (5250) should be used to offset these costs, but the rest of the assistancce also be used for credit purposes for life. Thank you.
Assumptions: Your employer has included the balance of payments as taxable income to you (16000-5250 = 10 750). Since you paid (or pay) taxes on the sound you how you want 10 750 to report. Not be used to offset the costs of education (because it has a tax liability for it.) If the employer did not report the excess on your W-2 in this case should not incur expenses and reduce spending on education. Example 1: Your employer has paid the 16,000 and not include in its taxable income to you. Their income has increased by 0, and expenses increased by 1,000. You can use the 1000 for education credits. Example 2: Your employer does not include the 16,000 as income to you. Their income has increased from 10 750 (at least 16K 5250) and expenditures increased by 11 750 (less than 17K 5250). You can use the education credit for 11 750.
